Cyclone Fani: Bangladesh averted major disruption

This was a category 4 strong storm with wind gusting upwards 220 kmph. Odisha, the Eastern Indian coastal state and specially it's famous temple town Puri borne directly the burnt of it's fury. West Bengal, another Eastern Indian state also lashed severely. 8 people so far lost their lives and trail of destruction abounds.

Meanwhile Bangladesh lying at northernmost tip of the Bay of Bengal, although had the full possibility of a complete battering, fortunately averted major disaster with some flooding and torrential rain thanks to gradual weakening of Fani after landfall in India.

At March 4 morning, much weakened Cyclone Fani crossed south western Bangladeshi division of Khulna with sustained wind gusting up to 60-70 kmph. Much of the wider area upwards capital Dhaka and even to northern district of Mymernsingh witnessed strong windshield, thunderstorm and heavy rain.

Bangladeshi authorities took precautions beforehand, with thousands of coastal people evacuated to nearby Cyclone Shelters and racked up other disaster response measures. Although many south western coastal districts have been hit with floods due to surging water, Bangladeshi authorities largely felt relieved as they averted the fate of Odisha.
