Magnificent medieval Artwork just barely standing!

A massive flame broke out at the medieval Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris on Monday evening, driving firemen to clear the zone around one of the city's most visited tourist spots.

Smoke could be seen surging out from the highest point of the gothic church building, as blazes jumped out other than its two ringer towers, a Reuters witness said.

It was not quickly clear what had caused the flame.

France 2 TV announced that police were investigating the occurrence as a mishap.

The house of God, which goes back to the twelfth century and is renowned for including in Victor Hugo's great novel the Hunchback of Notre-Dame, pulls in a huge number of visitors consistently.

"A horrible fire is in progress at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris," Mayor Anne Hidalgo said on Twitter.
